Is Usage Of Tampon Allowed In Islam?

In The Name Of Allah, The Most Beneficient, The Most Merciful.

Today we are going discuss a very significant topic. This issue is of great concern among Muslim families, majorly females.

Is usage of tampons allowed in Islam before marriage? Can someone lose their virginity to a tampon? Is tampon haram in Islam? These are few issues that we are going to solve today. These answers will be based on Islamic perspective, as well as scientific research.

So let us look into this in details.

Tampons In Islam!

As we know periods is the flow of impure blood (najis) out of our body. This contaminated blood is considered impure or naapak and hence in this state females are not permitted to touch Quran or pray Namaz. But they can recite any holy books or surahs orally or by heart.

During the times of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), women used cloth and other various remedies to keep themselves clean from the impure blood of periods. So, it is not a new matter to use stuff that can clean or hold your menstrual blood. Thus it is permissible for women to try out new products that can give them comfort during those days. But, a tampon is a new kind of product that is very different from pads or other sanitary products. This stuff is different as it should be inserted into the vagina.  Now the most common concern of our Muslim sisters is that such insertion may lose the virginity of women.

Can You Lose Your Virginity To A Tampon?

Yes, It may break your hymen, and you can lose your virginity to a tampon. But It happens in a very rare. The hymen is a stretchy tissue that covers the vaginal opening, and some insertion may break the hymen. It may also pass without breaking it or just by stretching it. But you will lose your virginity only if you have real sexual intercourse. Yes! That means that a tear from a tampon is not losing your virginity.

No matter how modern we are today, but many people question the virginity of a woman before marrying them. I know this situation is worst and we can blame no one for this. Girls I just want to say that the concerns of your mother or any elder are justifying.

Many people believe that when a tampon is inserted, the hymen breaks and hence the women no more is considered virgin, which is the significant sign of virtue and morality. They believe the women to be in a defect. But this is conscientiously opposed in Islam and stated that any girl might lose her virginity by any various other ways like sports, gymnastics, horse riding, injury, douche or even tampons, etc. Thus in Islam, it is wrong to suspect a woman on this basis, and one should not be looked down upon them as a sinister.

Imam al-Mawsili (Allah have mercy on him) states:

“If a woman lost her virginity due to jumping, injury, becoming old or (strong) menstrual periods, then she will be considered a virgin.” (al-Ikhtiyar li ta’lil al-Mukhtar, 3/116)

As far as an Islamic perspective, anything that is inserted into the vagina of married or unmarried is considered makruh.

We also know that it is prohibited for one to harm themselves or the others and using tampon leads to Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) thus we can say that tampon is harmful to one’s health and is prohibited in Islam.

Allah The Most Merciful And Great Says :

“And make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction.” (Surah al-Baqarah, V: 195)

The usage of tampons has many several complications. It may lead to excess absorption and result as toxic shock syndrome, or it may also cause you discomfort if kept overnight. Thus, it is better to stick to sanitary pads and other conventional methods rather than using tampons.

Thus I want to conclude by saying that women should avoid using tampons because may cause you harm and may also affect your virginity. If you don’t consider these as significant issues, you can go ahead and use tampons. Tampons are effective while swimming during periods.

May Allah guide you to the right path and guide you to that which pleases Him, Amen.
